September 10^th is Cheap Advice Day, a day to pay tribute to cut-rate counselors every where.  Today marks the day in 1992 that Lucy Van Pelt, Charles M. Schultz's amateur psychiatrist member of the Peanuts gang raised her rates for psychiatric help from 5¢ to 47¢. Her lemonade-stand psychiatry reminds us of all the freebie head-shrinkers out there that feel qualified to tell you just how to run your life and are willing to do so at no charge. So, since they all think you're crazy anyway, use the opportunity to tell your favorite girl how crazy you are about her with this card.

Today, September 9th we celebrate 26^th U.S. President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt's namesake. Yes, friends it's Teddy Bear Day!  We cuddle them, give them goofy names, invite them to little girls' tea parties and sleepovers.  Elvis sang about being one. Tell her you want to be her lovin' Teddy Bear with this cute card for Teddy Bear Day.

Greeting Card Campaign: 9-8 Pledge of Allegiance Day

It's Pledge of Allegiance Day here in the United States.  The Pledge of Allegiance was first published by New York author Francis Bellamy in the magazine Youth's Companion. In time, the "Pledge of Allegiance" has been adopted as the official pledge to the flag for school children, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Knights of Columbus, Royal Rangers, Pathfinders, Toastmasters and other groups throughout the country. It was gathered participants.

Officially adopted by the US Congress in 1942, the pledge has been modified four times. The US Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that no one can be compelled to recite the Pledge, or punished for not doing so.  The official version according to the United States Flag Code reads:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The code further states:  The Pledge of Allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.

Surprisingly, chess mastery is less about intelligence than it is about practice, experience and pattern recognition.  Whip out the old chess board today and see if you can lose gracefully to your beloved.  Let her know that last time you checked she was your best "mate" with this chess-flavored greeting card.

Greeting Card Campaign: 8-31 Cow Chip Tossing Day

August 31 is one of my very favorite weird special days.  It's Cow Chip Tossing Day! We think this was an idea cooked up by some Wisconsin dairy farmer as a way to get people to pick up all the cow chips (that's cow poop to you city slickers) and fling them somewhere else so he didn't have to.  The idea caught on and now, all across the fruited plain, in livestock producing areas everywhere, annual cow chip tossing contests and festivals have sprung up - usually on this last day of August when the dog days of summer have had time to thoroughly quick dry some very nice, tossable cow patties.  The secret is in the drying.  Wet or crumbly cow chips just don't toss well.  My grandpa used to collect them in spring and dry them on a rack in the sun over the summer.  Just before the competition, he'd spray paint his chips gold. He kept one on his desk as a paperweight. It had a squishy foam pad glued to the bottom to freak out inquisitive children who couldn't resist picking it up.

Well now, it's Kiss Me Day - one of my favorite holidays.  The holiday marks the very first screen kiss in 1929 between that spinach chugging cartoon slugger, Popeye the Sailor Man and his one true lady love, the ahead-of-her time-skinny-as-a-rail Olive Oyl.  Her response?

"My hero," she said, falling into a swoon - possibly from hunger.  It was, after all, the beginning of the Depression. Today is the day for heroes and their sweethearts to demonstrate their affection for one another with a bit of labial osculation (it means kissing so calm down all you prepubescents).  Send your own Miss Oyl a cock-eyed "romantic" greeting card and seal it with a kiss (SWAK)?

It's Hand-Holding Day.  Remember the first time you held her hand. It was like electricity passed between you. As time goes on, it became a more comfortable thing until soon you were holding hands without thinking about it as though you were each a natural extension of the other.

The guy who invented Hand-Holding Day has never been identified. He was probably a terribly shy person who needed a holiday to give him an excuse to make his move. Greeting Card Campaign: 8-08 Swimming Day

It's Swimming Day. It's also the birthday of great movie star and champion swimmer Esther Williams. Also on August 8, Brian Hyland and the John Dixon Orchestra hit the top of the American popular music charts with their hit single, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini."

It's a day to celebrate the exploits of great American swimmers like Johnny Weissmuller (yes the guy that played Tarzan in the movies), Duke Kahanamoku, the great Hawaiian swimmer who with Johnny Weissmuller established the American Crawl as the premier speed swimming stroke in a whole string of Olympic games and set records that stood for decades. Mark Spitz who tore up the 1972 Olympics carried away a total of 9 gold medals in his Olympic career was followed more recently by Michael Phelps who has so far earned 18 gold medals.

Take a dip in the lake, ocean or a swimming pool on August 8^th or better yet, go swimming with your sweetheart. If you can't, here's a nice card you can send her. Greeting Card Campaign: National Ice Cream Day

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan (Republican) officially declared July as National Ice Cream Month, and established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in July.  Why celebrate?

1. Why not?
2. Our womenfolk LOVE ice cream?
3. It keeps cows occupied.
4. It encourages cute pictures of babies putting their faces into ice cream cones.
5. It gives us an excuse to drag out the old ice cream freezer

This year (2013) we celebrate National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 21, 2013.  That date is also  National Junk Food Day.  It's something of a coincidence that they fall on the same day this year.  I'll also be posting an NJFD card for the 21st of July since that's a fixed-date holiday, whereas National Ice Cream Day is on a specific day of the week. 

This card is a side fold card, so the only trick to printing it is to make sure the text on both sides is the same way up.  It's not opposite facing like a top fold card.  I'm working on a CD collection of pdf files for every holiday for every day of the year so you can keep 'em coming like clockwork.  Feel free to download the images and slap them on a full page in your word processor or publishing software.  Print on cardstock front and back both sides facing the same way (flipped on the short side if you're using a printer that does double sided printing).


Have fun.  Bring your wife ice cream in bed.  I find that an effective technique for encouraging National Ice Cream Day celebrations. After you've enjoyed your ice cream, do something energetic to work off the calories. Be creative.
